Daniel Tynan SC

Daniel is an experienced advocate with a broad ranging commercial and regulatory practice. He appears in complex, high profile and high value litigation. Daniel appears principally in trial and appellate matters in the Federal Court and Supreme Court.

Daniel is an expert in competition and consumer law and is regarded as one of Australia’s leading barristers in this field. He acts for the ACCC, corporations and individuals and has appeared in many of the significant cases in recent years.  Daniel is listed in Doyle’s Guide, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers as a Leading Barrister in Competition and Consumer Law.

Daniel is also an expert in Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Law. He has acted in every money laundering case commenced by AUSTRAC in the Federal Court since 2015, including proceedings against TAB Limited, the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac Bank, Crown Melbourne, Star Casino, Sky City Casino and others.

He represents corporations, financial institutions and individuals in proceedings brought by various international and domestic regulators involving allegations of cartel conduct, fraud, money laundering and other corporate crime and misconduct.

In 2026, Daniel taught Advanced Obligations and Remedies for the University of Sydney at Cambridge University and Anti-Corruption Law at the University of Sydney.

Daniel has lectured in Competition and Consumer Law, Anti-Money Laundering Law, Evidence Law, Civil Procedure and Public Law at the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, the University of Technology, Sydney and the Australian National University.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Daniel was a solicitor at Clayton Utz and a Senior Lawyer at the Australian Government Solicitor. He was an Associate to the Hon Rodney Madgwick KC in the Federal Court of Australia and was a legal and political adviser to the Hon Robert McClelland MP.

Daniel has a Bachelor of Science (Psych) Hons (Dean’s List) and a Bachelor of Laws (Dean’s List) from the University of New South Wales. He was the John W. Kirkwood Scholar in the Faculty of Law at UNSW. He has completed a Master of Law at Cambridge University.

Daniel is the co-author of Uniform Evidence Law: Commentary and Materials 7^th ed, 2023, with Justice Peden and Judge Kumar.
